Buttons: A Timeless Tale

So what button has caught your eye lately?

A button pinned to someones shirt has caught your attention. You quickly find use of this information and whether you have a common interest with that person. Looking around, you see buttons all around you, some go unnoticed, others yell for your attention. At one point, everyone has found a button they love. But why are we so attracted to wearing and reading buttons?

Long live the Button!

Buttons have been used throughout human history to identify ourselves within our communities and are still used the same today. Women enjoy wearing decorative brooches. Military and ruling officials use badges to display their ranking. In fact, the oldest brooch found is over 4000 years old.

Buttons and brooches are used in many cultures around the world but are always used to identify the wearer. Whether used to signify a persons rank in military, social class, or competition; the badge has played an important role in human history.  Buttons are a valuable symbol that have endeared the times.

The 1960’s saw an explosion of interest placed into making buttons that forever preserved the passion that was felt at that time. You may still be familiar with the most popular hippy favorites of that time including “ban the bra” and “make love, not war”. Later the punk generation enjoyed filling vests with their favorite bands and calls for anarchy. Now, practically everyone has collected a button they enjoyed and felt connected with.

“Who are you?”

Well, you are dynamic and so is your choice in the buttons you wear. People choose buttons that reveal an unconscious link to their relationship to the world around them.  They hold a special meaning to a person, place, or time, because your mind places a lot of value on maintaining connections between thoughts.

Without saying a word, your button continues to spread your message everywhere you go.

What message will you share with the world?
